In recent years, many homeowners have discovered that creating a space with an emphasis on natural rhythm, airflow and lighting invokes an overall sense of well-being. Biophilic interiors emphasize designs that create calming environments reminiscent of nature. This trend takes into account circadian rhythms and visual stimuli by encouraging the use of natural lighting and dimmable fixtures.

It addresses subtle changes in air and surface temperature, and humidity and airflow, with fans, air purifiers and clean designs. Water is experienced in different ways including water therapy and soaking tubs. Plants, windows and other greenery add a visual connection with nature. Symbolic representations such as the Fibonacci sequence or the “golden spiral” within the aesthetic of the design mimic perfection found in nature.

Biophilic design is about embracing nature with all five senses, and the bathroom is the ideal place to start. Immerse yourself in a multisensory experience by selecting deep soaking tubs and rain shower heads. When possible, choose natural materials for the home: stone, metal, wood, rattan and wicker, among others. Biophilic interiors try to bring nature inside, but remember to enjoy nature outside as well. An outdoor shower or water feature promotes peace and wellbeing.

Sleek metal-finish appliances are reminiscent of natural metals, bringing form and function to any space. Wine and beverage refrigerators throughout the home provide easy access to drinks that activate your sense of taste. For touch, consider faucets with care, choosing both the finishes and water flow that appeal to you most. Textured, pebbled surfaces and smooth, shiny finishes both offer tactile appeal in different ways. Don’t forget ceiling fans, which can emulate the look of nature along with letting you feel the movement of the air.

Delight your sense of vision further by echoing the colors, patterns and shapes found in nature. Lights, mirrors, cabinet pulls, tile and more are pleasing to the eye when you select deep curves, metallic accents and rich hues. Look for pieces that call to mind the “golden spiral” – the Fibonacci sequence that can be found throughout nature, math, science and art. Chandelier light fixtures often mirror waterfall, spiral, or branch and leaf shapes, making them perfect for this design sensibility.

Meal preparation is a great way to interact with the Biophilic Intention trend. Your sense of taste, smell, sight, sound and touch will be engaged as you prepare meals. Outdoor grills and kitchens let you prep and dine amidst nature, making the experience even more satisfying. Of course, we can’t forget about the hallmark of biophilic interiors: plants. Seeing and being near greenery is known to promote relaxation and aid in stress relief. This is true of both natural plants and faux versions, as well as depictions of nature, from floral prints to photography.

The best way to design and decorate with Biophilic Intention is to see what pieces resonate with you. What makes you feel calm and comfortable, and what do you instinctively want to touch or experience? There’s plenty of flexibility in this style, so feel free to mix and match as you see fit. An end result that calls nature to mind will make the home a relaxing oasis for yourself and your guests.
