Trends & Influences: Moody Japandi
Moody Japandi is a combination of Scandinavian and Japanese styles with clean lines, high-contrast colors and storage.
Japandi, which is a meshing of the Scandinavian and Japanese styles, has been around for a few years. The earliest iterations brought us modern and contemporary lighting along with plumbing fixtures, clean lines with hidden storage, and the use of materials like marble, bamboo, brass and slate. This year, we’ll see this minimalist style retain its functionality while incorporating darker tones than we’ve seen it previously feature. A harmonious contrast will be created with matte black, gold, darker shades of wood and bold strikes of jewel tones.
With the Moody Japandi style, less is more. This is reflected in the minimalist, three-blade fan structure and the sleek style lines of the sink. Black finishes help set the dramatic, moody tone but are beautifully juxtaposed by crisp, natural fabrics.
In keeping with the Japandi look we already know, and love, natural wood and stone are foundational parts of the design. Linear style lines maintain the minimal aesthetic, but the introduction of a curved faucet and round accents help to break up all the angles.
Contemporary lighting and dramatic fixtures are statement-making art pieces within this design style. When you’re designing for a minimalist aesthetic, you get to make the most of every element included in the design. Choose dramatic egg-shaped tubs, bold two-toned fixtures and even throw in a lively pop of color.
When you're keeping the look clean, you need to have a proper place for all your belongings. Include plenty of drawers, cabinets, and hidden storage solutions within the design to keep your clutter contained and use your exposed display to showcase only the items you love the most.
