Trends & Influences: Modernized Mid-Century
Each new generation puts its own spin on MCM, and we are loving the softer lines and hues of this iteration.
Mid-Century Modern (MCM) has solidified its place among the timeless design styles of our time. Its sleek lines, juxtaposition of sizes and interesting shapes make it a versatile favorite. As such, each new generation puts its own spin on it. This year brings softer lines and bolder hues than traditional MCM. In contrast, clunky appliances will be replaced by streamlined, integrated appliances. Sputnik lighting, an MCM essential, is back with a more linear look. Contemporary and geometry-inspired fixtures complete the twist on this classic style.
MCM décor often relies upon juxtaposition to make a statement, as in this ornate built-in gas grill set in unpretentious cabinetry. This Sputnik light with its geometric elements offers balance. The faucet with its side spout is a nod to Frank Lloyd Wright, a pioneer of the MCM movement.
Influenced by popular hues, color is injected into the modern version of MCM using appliances, mixed-metal lighting, plumbing and hardware elements.
Lines are kept level here with austere, luxury appliances. Wall tile adds brilliant color while a linear sputnik chandelier adds style without taking away from the clean look of the space.
Glossy materials such as glass, vinyl, metal, plywood, Lucite and Plexiglass are common in this style. These materials offer a way to insert bold color and texture into a space in everything from lighting to vanities.
