Get to Know Irina Mazhukhin

Irina Mazhukhin is an interior designer, content creator, wife, mom and lover of all things home related. For the past 8 years, she and her husband have been remodeling their own homes and are now focused on renovating a 1960s flip house. In the future, Mazhukhin says, “my dream project would be to open a wedding/event venue in the countryside that would be a place people can gather with a warm and inviting atmosphere.”

All About the Look

Mazhukhin describes how “my design aesthetic is always changing and evolving, but I think most of all, I love to create spaces that feel warm and inviting.” She does this by placing the focus on the feel of the space, rather than the appearance of the space. When you look at her designs, look for the pop of dark green she includes in most of her spaces.

Finding Inspiration

When it comes to finding the inspiration for her projects, Mazhukhin expresses how “Instagram has some wonderful inspiration, and I follow so many accounts that make me stop mid-scroll with their beautiful content. Pinterest has also always been a source of inspiration for me, with so many design styles that inspire me to be bolder with my choices.”

Where to Start a Project

Every project needs a jumping-off point and Mazhukhin says, “I always start with creating a mood board with every project. I think it’s important to visually create a board of all your ideas to organize your thoughts. This helps narrow down the design aesthetic and guides the project in a smooth manner.”

When to Break the Rules

Interior design has many rules that help result in visually appealing design, but all designers add their personal stamp by breaking these rules from time-to-time. Mazhukhin agrees that “because interior design trends are always changing, I think breaking certain design rules is what sets you apart as unique and creative.” When it comes to which of the rules she likes to break, she proclaims, “I like playing around with mixing colors and patterns that you normally wouldn’t see together.”

Design Tips & Tricks

Every interior designer has a few tips and tricks that help make their spaces a treat for the eyes.

Save Vs. Splurge

Any interior design project starts with a budget and making the most of that budget is all about deciding where to invest more money and where to cut back and save a little. When designing her spaces, Mazhukhin says, “I like to splurge on statement pieces that are unique, and I know will be in my home a long time. For instance, a beautiful, one-of-a-kind chandelier in your living room that you love.” After splurging on the statement pieces, she says, “I like to save on items I know I might change out eventually as my style changes, like rugs and décor items.”

5 Must-Have Items for Every Design

If you love this design as much as we do and want to incorporate the same tips and tricks into your own designs, consider making sure these five must-have items are part of the design plan.

  1. Lighting: “In my opinion, you can never have enough lighting and it serves a function as well as a look. Lighting creates a mood, and a mix of overhead, floor, table, and wall lamps all contribute to that mood.”
  2. Plants and Greenery: “There is something about plants that make every home look better, whether they are real or fake.”
  3. Rugs: “Whether they are neutral or bold, rugs create an element of coziness while bringing in texture and color. A rug can unify a whole room in my opinion!”
  4. Art: “Pieces that complement the home are so important and bring some life to the home. Art is a great way to showcase the personality of the homeowners.”
  5. One-of-a-Kind Pieces: “Incorporating at least a few of these gives your home a unique look.”

Working with Ferguson

“As home renovators, we are always looking for appliances, lighting, hardware, plumbing, etc. and we have purchased so many of those products through Ferguson. The team is so experienced, the quality of the products is impressive, and the inventory of the products is incomparable.,” explains Mazhukhin.

When working with clients, she explains, “I love that you can go visit the Ferguson Showroom if you want to see a product in person. The sales team is very knowledgeable and helps guide you to the products you will love in your home.” When it comes to selection, she says, “I love that you can shop everything for your home all in one place! This makes the home renovating process so much easier.”
