Large holes in your wall can easily be created with just a firm bump. They might be daunting to fix but are definitely a DIY project that you can tackle without any fear!

  • Approximate Time: 60 min.
  • DIY Difficulty: Medium

Tools / Materials:

Before you get started, gather the following tools and materials.

  • Utility knife
  • Scrap drywall
  • Drywall joint tap
  • Drywall screws
  • Taping knives (14" and 3" are most useful)
  • Electric drill
  • Scrap wood (preferably 1x1)
  • Sanding block
  • Quick set joint compound
  • Square measuring tape
  • Pencil

Step by Step Instructions

Now that we have our supplies, repairing the hole in your wall is an easy feat that can be done in only six steps. Let's get started.

Step 1:

Cut a square hold larger than the existing hole so you can fit in a new piece of drywall. After creating a square over your hole, use a straight edge and utility knife to score the drywall. Then make cuts towards the center so the drywall breaks cleanly.

Step 2:

Cut out a square the same size as your hole from scrap drywall, making sure it’s the same thickness.

Step 3:

Trim the scrapwood as backing for the patch and drill in place using drywall screws. Then, drill scrap drywall into backing to hold drywall in place.
