From Our Kitchen to Yours: Cocktail Edition
Learn how to make these two classic cocktails for your next get-together
Negroni Cocktail
A classic aperitif, this cocktail is a perfect palate cleanser before dinner.
INGREDIENTS
1.5 oz gin
1.5 oz sweet vermouth
1.5 oz Campari
Orange twist
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare the Garnish
Thinly slice an orange peel, avoiding as much of the pith (the white under-peel) as possible. Set aside for garnish.
Step 2: Measure & Mix
Using a mixing glass and jigger, measure and pour the three liquid ingredients into the glass and add ice (you don’t want to put the ice in first). Using a cocktail spoon, stir the ingredients together to mix and cool them.
Step 3: Strain, Garnish, and Serve
Add cubed ice to a tumbler, then strain the cocktail over ice. Next, twist the orange peel over the glass to release citric acid, then drop the peel into the drink.
Mixologist's Tip: Whether you shake or stir your cocktails, always add ice to the mixing glass after the liquid ingredients. Assembling the drink in this order will prevent the flavor being diluted by melting ice.
To make this cocktail a little lighter and more refreshing, try adding a splash of sparkling water or mineral water.
Enjoy!
Hemingway Cocktail
The Hemingway cocktail is a take on the traditional daiquiri (think white rum and lime juice shaken with ice, not the blue slurpees sold by the yard on the Vegas strip). This drink is named (no surprise) for Ernest Hemingway and was developed in Havana, Cuba by Constantino Ribailagua Vert specifically for the legendary novelist. The most unusual ingredient in this drink is the Maraschino liqueur, a little of which goes a long way.
INGREDIENTS
2 oz white rum
¼ oz maraschino liqueur
¾ oz fresh grapefruit juice
½ oz lime juice
¼ oz simple syrup
Lime wedge
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Prepare the Garnish
Slice and juice the citrus, keeping a lime wedge (or slice) for garnish.
Step 2: Measure & Shake
Measure and pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and then add ice (always add ice after pouring the liquors). Shake well.
Step 3: Strain, Garnish, and Serve
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass with no ice (also known as serving it “up”). Of course, there are no rules, you can have this on the rocks or even blended if you want.
