Everyone loves a good before and after. It’s why home renovation shows are so popular. Watching an ordinary space transform into something beautiful and functional is inspiring—and something we get to do in Ferguson Showrooms every day.
At Ferguson, we partner with trade professionals to create remodeling masterpieces using the best lighting, plumbing, and bath fixtures, as well as premium appliances for every space. The Best of Show Transformations highlights these remarkably talented creators and their innovative remodel designs.
Here are six of our favorite transformations:
Warm Contemporary Kitchen
Donna McMahon of KE Interior Solutions didn’t even have to change the footprint of this kitchen to transform it into an entirely new warm, contemporary space. Wall cabinets are taken to the ceiling, maximizing storage. The cabinets are key to the design here: walnut, flat-paneled, and streamlined.
McMahon opted to create multiple cooking stations, including a Monogram Advantium single oven, and she made the most of the kitchen peninsula by installing an induction cooktop by Wolf Appliances. The peninsula is lighted by a contemporary-style pendant.
The Asko dishwasher and panel-ready refrigerator from JennAir maintain the sleek flow of the kitchen, as does the absence of cabinetry surrounding the window. The Delta Pivotal kitchen faucet makes a statement in the sink area. McMahon installed under cabinet lighting above the counters and in the kick space to provide both task lighting and mood lighting.
“The use of lighting—especially layered lighting—makes moving around the kitchen safer and easier. Extensive task lighting, overhead, and toe-kick lighting offer many options to see better, along with creating and controlling moods within the space.” - Donna McMahon, KE Interior Solutions, Denver, CO
White-on-White Transitional Kitchen
Amy Fagan of Fagan White Design transformed a dimly lit kitchen into a sunny, bright, and welcoming family gathering space. Cabinets were sized down to make room for windows on either side of the Monogram dual-fuel range, making all the difference in lighting the room. A custom Venta range hood with a slimmed-down profile was paired with it.
Upgraded stainless steel appliances that complement the kitchen’s design were perfect for this space. Including a side-by-side refrigerator, built-in dishwasher, built-in beverage center, and countertop microwave, all from Monogram.
An elongated kitchen island replaced a peninsula, opening up the room, and dark countertops were replaced with white, reflecting the natural light. A stainless steel undermount double bowl sink was placed in the island—right in the center of kitchen life—paired with a pull-out spray kitchen faucet in polished chrome. Above the island hang pendant lights from Visual Comfort.
“Add natural light whenever possible. For this project, we added windows on either side of the stove top to flood the kitchen in beautiful natural light.” - Amy Fagan, Fagan White Design, Plano, TX
Modern Tudor Kitchen
DawnElise Hamilton’s aim was to transform this kitchen from a merely functional space into “an inviting, warm room, and the true heart of the house.” An open concept floorplan and plenty of natural light helped her achieve just that. A kitchen island with second prep sink even allows for more cooks in the kitchen. The large industrial-style pendants from Visual Comfort ensure the area is well-lit.
Beige cabinets were swapped for bright white, complemented by white marble countertops and subway backsplash tile. Shadowbox cabinets help to light the darker end of the kitchen, as does under-cabinet lighting. Rustic hardwood flooring anchors the space and is perfectly balanced by the wood tones in the open shelving, window trim, and ceiling beams.
Hamilton created a beverage station by installing a Wolf built-in automatic coffee machine as well as a built-in beverage center. The grand window makes the sink area the star of the show, and deservedly so. The Blanco undermount sink blends seamlessly into the marble countertop and pairs flawlessly with a gold-finish faucet from Newport Brass.
“Double stack your cabinets if you have empty space above them that is currently filled with decorative plates and fake plants. You get more storage and a much grander feeling kitchen!” - DawnElise Hamilton, DawnElise Interiors International, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, FL
High-Tech Contemporary Kitchen
Fully gutting a space is no small undertaking. It takes true vision, patience, and an open mind. Jason Hodges of J. Hodges and Associates, LLC offers this advice when completely renovating a space, “always go in with an open mind that the project will evolve and change as decisions are made.” The kitchen of this row house was a blank slate with beautiful bones and lots of character when Hodges began the project, and there was much work to be done.
Opting for a contemporary design, Hodges used a neutral palette of black and cool gray. This set the tone perfectly for the sleek, connected refrigerator, cooktop, rangehood, and oven in stainless steel and black stainless steel.
Hodges chose an apron front sink with undermount installation to maintain the streamlined look along the island, paired with the minimalist-style, single-hole Blanco Sonoma pull-down kitchen faucet. The Feiss linear chandelier, which combines the traditional profile of a tapered shade with on-trend clear seeded glass, is a perfect way to tie in the classic brick fireplace with the rest of the space.
“Design is a group effort, so make sure to listen to your clients during the process to make sure the space is both beautiful and functional.” - Jason Hodges, J. Hodges and Associates, LLC, Washington, DC
Charming Old-World Kitchen
For some, redesigning their kitchen means opening it up and making sure there is enough seating for the entire family—the entire extended family! That seems to have been the idea in this design by Marissa Matiyasic of Reflections Interior Design.
With its large wooden beams, huge dining table and island, and deep fireclay sink, this space is full of old-world character. The appliances are large and luxurious: a panel-ready dishwasher from Bosch, panel-ready refrigerator, built-in Perlick commercial series wine refrigerator, and Wolf freestanding gas range with French top. The range hood and European-style backsplash tile completes the old-world look.
Matiyasic chose to lighten the kitchen with new cabinets and paint as well as anchor it with warm oak-look flooring. Removing the island peninsula and replacing it with a large rectangular island allowed for more counter area, more seating, and a microwave drawer in the island. The Briolette pendant lights from Tech Lighting over the island provide ambient lighting and a bit of a modern touch.
“Tell the story in your home that reflects you the most!” - Marissa Matiyasic, Reflections Interior Design, Cleveland Heights, OH
Dramatic Luxe Spa Bathroom
“Plan your bathroom layout around the idea of what is functional,” says Sean Kelly of Lamperti Contracting & Design. Function is, of course, the most important element of a bathroom, but design should not be discounted, says Kelly, “If your bathroom is a part of your master bedroom, it is critical to blend the design...make it an extension of the room that flows well without taking away from the grandeur of the bedroom.” It would certainly take an incredible bedroom to match to the opulence of this bathroom.
Every elegant bathroom has a beautiful soaking tub and this one is a 65-inch modern shape by Victoria + Albert. It’s paired with a wall-mounted tub spout, thermostatic handle, and hand shower. The tub is matched in luxury by the flawless walk-in shower enclosure. The linear drain makes it possible to have a seamless transition from bathroom to shower floor. Multiple shower heads controlled by a digital shower system guarantee a custom shower experience.
Kelly chose Modern Forms lighting from the Tower and Cinema Collections for this space, adding additional touches of glamour with seeded glass and aged brass finishes. The vanity and sink area anchor the space and the gold-framed mirrors act to emphasize the gold touches in the statement wall behind the tub. The Graff Incanto widespread sink faucet is the perfect accent to the space with its contemporary style.
“Instead of remodeling from a design perspective, think of things from a use perspective. Planning an effective space has everything to do with your lifestyle and how you best use the space. Make sure you incorporate this in your bathroom remodeling.” - Sean Kelly, Lamperti Contracting & Design, San Rafael, CA
These inspiring transformations may just be the jumping-off point for a quick refresh or a complete remodel of a room in your home. Turn your master bathroom into a relaxing oasis with spa-like upgrades or make the most of mealtime with a warm and contemporary kitchen re-do. You can even take the ideas and design concepts behind these spaces and use them in different rooms entirely.
