The air bath, or to some, the bubbler, was developed in the 1980s for the healthcare industry to provide thermo-air massage therapy. Air Tub Installation Options

Air tubs, like whirlpools, require a little extra space for most models. The pump and air jet internal parts are concealed along the outside of the tub but under the cover of the tub decking for most installations.

Drop In - A drop-in air tub installation fits the air tub down into an existing deck, with the top edge of the tub resting over the surround.

Undermount - The undermount installation is designed to hide the tub under the flat edge of the deck.

Three Wall Alcove - For smaller bathrooms, the three wall alcove installation fits your air tub in against an existing walled enclosure. An apron panel allows for an exposed front without the need for an additional wall or decking.

Free standing - A free-standing air tub can be placed directly on the tub floor, with no need for a surrounding support deck. They line up with the plumbing for the drain and for the faucet, but are otherwise self-contained.

Drain Placement

The drain placement of an air tub is based on the location of the connection required to fit the tub to the existing plumbing. It also influences the location of the pump and other parts, so should be factored into the design of the room before you buy the tub. The only exception to the norm with drain placement is the reversible drain placement, which has no distinguishing features that mark a front or back of the tub, so these tubs can be fit to the plumbing as needed.

To determine the drain placement, look at the tub location from the front, most likely the side exposed to the door of your bathroom when you first walk in. If the plumbing hookups for the drain is on your left, you will need a left drain placement. For a right drain placement, the connection will be on the right hand side. A center drain placement is more often found in corner, or square shaped air tubs, with the drain located in the middle of the tub, usually near the back.

Before You Buy Your Air Tub

Air tubs can be slightly larger than standard bathtubs, and they may need a deck surround built to hide the internal parts. This can differ from common expectations, so there a few things to be aware of.

Measure it out - Make sure to measure the doorways, hallways, and stairwells between the delivery point and the bathroom to ensure the tub can be carried to the installation point.

Ensure easy access - A well-cared for tub requires regular maintenance, so when planning the tub surround, be sure the pump access panel is not blocked by walls, vanities, doors, or other fixtures.

Plan to accessorize - When selecting your air tub, keep in mind that accessories like lumbar support pillows, support bars, and add-on pillows are available, but they do subtract from the interior dimensions of the tub.

Be smart about energy - A larger tub requires more water than others, and even with a heated air pump, you’ll want to be sure the water heater can handle the job without too much extra strain on the monthly energy bills.
