Trends & Influences: Reclaim
Capture the Reclaim trend by considering both form and function, with an emphasis on longevity
RECLAIM
Verb, re-claim
Definition: to restore to a previous natural state
New ideas will come and go, but some things are meant to linger eternal. The right design and accessories will always feel current, regardless of when they’re acquired. Capture the Reclaim trend by considering both form and function, with an emphasis on longevity. These can include eco-conscious materials, classic furnishings, timeless decor and investment purchases.
"Reclaiming the past to redefine the future.... In the world of interior design, Reclaim isn’t just a trend; it’s a powerful ethos, a celebration of heritage and a conscious effort towards sustainable living. It’s about cherishing vintage pieces, repurposing forgotten treasures, and breathing new life into spaces. As a designer, I find it crucial to help guide my clients in this journey of rediscovery. By embracing Reclaim, we not only create unique, narrative driven, character-rich interiors but also contribute to a more eco-conscious world. It’s not just about design; it’s a commitment to telling stories, preserving memories, and crafting spaces that resonate with the soul.”

The Reclaim trend is environmentally conscious by nature, valuing sustainability in all aspects of design and decor. You can exemplify this trend in a variety of ways, from the raw materials you use to the technology you choose. Recycled and renewable flooring options, for example, are readily available in a range of styles. We also can easily find products that support energy efficiency, water conservation and lower carbon footprints. ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, heating and cooling equipment and lighting choices take the guesswork out of the equation, helping you make an informed decision with just a glance at the label.
Longevity is also inherent to the Reclaim trend, because pieces designed for longevity provide value at every stage. We often think of investment pieces as big or expensive, and that can certainly be true. Quality granite countertops, induction ovens and efficient HVAC systems, for example, may initially have an intimidating price tag. But when you consider the daily use and total life of the product, you realize that it’s usually more affordable than replacing things on a regular basis. The retail cost doesn’t matter as much as the form and function of the piece. This counts for new items that you buy, along with pieces that you inherit, receive as gifts, or make yourself. If it occupies a permanent place in the home, it qualifies as a true investment piece.
There are some truths to design that remain no matter the time or place. Reclaim is a current trend, but at its core it is focused on that which lasts. If you’re looking for pieces that will withstand the test of time, and never look dated, you can start with Midcentury Modern. This design style has been prevalent for over fifty years and shows no sign of waning. It is defined by the same things that make up the essence of the Reclaim trend: clean lines, an emphasis on practicality and aesthetics, and a lack of excess. Similarly, neutral colors will always look fresh, along with pieces that mimic the look and feel of nature within the home.
Consider using sustainable resources that are good for your home and the environment, or biophilic elements that echo the beauty, sights and sounds of nature. Invest in long-term choices that will continue to pay off, like high-quality countertops, energy-efficient appliances, customizable smart home technology and water-saving fixtures, remembering that longevity trumps recyclability every single time. Add lighting, hardware and decor with clean lines and subtle details to truly embody this trend.
