victorian style

Victorian interior design could be described as the opposite of minimalism. Heavy ornamentation, a lavish mix of patterns & textures, and loads of accessories characterize the look. The style gets its name from the reign of Queen Victoria, which lasted from 1837 to 1901. Industrialization during the period allowed for the mass production of home furnishings, making decorative goods affordable for the middle class.

Victorian decor had a wide range of influences including Gothic Revival, rococo, and medieval architecture & design, and decorative elements inspired by world travel. Rooms were filled with extravagant details and no surface was left unadorned. Furniture featured ornately carved wood with tufted upholstery in rich velvet or patterned fabrics. Lighting included detailed metalwork with shades of pressed glass or colorful stained glass. An eclectic mix of patterns was introduced with chintz and damask textiles & wallcoverings and Persian rugs. Mirrors, picture frames, clocks, servingware, and accessories were highly ornamented with gilding and hand-painted motifs. Soft goods — like pillows, lampshades, draperies, and linens — showcased detailed needlework, tassels, beaded trim, and fringe. The palette was deep and rich and it was fashionable to use at least three colors in a single space.

Elements of Victorian design can complement a range of current styles. Furniture and wallcoverings in soft pastels and muted floral chintz work well with French Country decor. Persian rugs, embellished fabrics, and stained glass accents add depth and interest to Bohemian design. For Traditional and Transitional rooms, try adding classic rug patterns, curved-back seating in solid fabrics with simplified silhouettes, and narrow the overall palette to one or two colors.

Light fixtures, faucets, door hardware, and accessories inspired by Victorian design add romantic elegance to any space.
