The Gift of Design: Influencer Melissa Oholendt

Oho Interiors Design Firm, based in Minnesota and Colorado, has been nationally recognized for their casually elegant interiors by publications such as Domino, MyDomaine, Midwest Home, One Kings Lane, and more. Self-described by founder Melissa Oholendt as “a full-service boutique interior design firm specializing in high-end remodels of all sizes,” her goal with each new project is to enhance clients’ lives with great home design.

Oho Interiors takes an architecture-first approach to designing spaces while considering aesthetic, function, and form. With the belief that great design lies in the details, Oho Interiors is passionate about crafting homes where clients feel embraced and understood.

For Oho Interiors, it’s imperative to always start with understanding the wants, needs, and hopes of the client... and almost every time this boils down to the question, “how do you want your home to feel?” Building, renovating or refurnishing a space demands introspection and the analyzation of the homeowner’s habits and routines in a way that very few things in life ever ask of us. One big piece of advice that Oho Interiors offers to clients is to be honest with themselves about how they will utilize a space.

The Project

Oholendt says: “This is a project close to our hearts and even closer to home. My husband and I have spent the last two and a half years lovingly pouring ourselves into a full-gut renovation of our 1940 farmhouse cottage. The last piece of the puzzle is the guest house on the property that needs a bit of TLC and attention. The kitchen is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door of the guest house and giving that space a face lift feels like step one to this phase of the renovation.”

The Process

Our in-house designers used products from Build with Ferguson chosen by Oholendt, along with inspiration input from the influencer, to give the kitchen space a virtual makeover using computer-generated imagery (CGI). CGI allowed Build with Ferguson designers to use computer-generated imagery to create a realistic representation of the space, which is a great way to visualize and present concepts before actual implementation.

The result is dramatic, updated, and purposeful. Oholendt states, “I am choosing to view it as a gift to the next caretakers of this house. Not only a fully, flushed out design plan for them to hand to someone to execute, but also the computer-generated visuals to show them the potential of how impossibly stunning, functional, and filled to the brim with charm it can be.”

Working with Build with Ferguson

Oholendt, like all designers, has established many connections within the home improvement and interior deign world. She says that her Ferguson representative is one of her most valued trade relationships.

“Between ensuring we have the right valves for our fixtures or making sure we have down rods for our ceiling fans to providing options for a sparkling water system, there’s no question too small or inconvenient.”

Style and Selection

“...any general contractor or builder will tell you that the quality of items from Build (especially plumbing) is inherently higher than what you can get off the shelf at any home improvement store. As designers who want the quality of our clients’ experience in their homes to be just as great as the visuals, this is important to us.”

Oholendt says that knowing she can find “the perfect splurge” on the same site as she can find a more budget-friendly-option is so convenient.
