How to Install a Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals reduce waste and simplify cleanup. And installing one is a true DIY project. You'll first need to verify you have an electrical outlet beneath the sink.

NOTE: Garbage disposals can vary across brands and models, so this guide is meant as a general guide. Be sure to read the manufacturer installation instructions.

Tools/Materials

• Adjustable wrench or crescent wrench
• Screwdriver
• Plumber's putty
• Power cord (if not included with new disposal)

Step by Step Instructions

STEP 1

Remove the wiring access plate. Feed the wiring through the hole next to the access plate.

STEP 2

Connect the power cord to the disposal. Connect the wires: white to white, black to black (using wire caps), and secure the green wire to the green screw. Tighten everything down and re-attach the wiring access plate.

STEP 3

Install the drain spout. It may be necessary to trim the spout to fit your setup.

STEP 4

If you’re installing your garbage disposal to connect to the dishwasher, remove the spout plug with a hammer and screwdriver. If you’re not connecting the disposal to the dishwasher, skip this step.

STEP 5

Install the flange. Use a good amount of plumber’s putty and make a rope of it to wrap around the shoulder of the flange. Place the flange into the drain hole.

STEP 6

Secure the flange beneath the sink. Follow the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer to ensure you place the several parts in the correct order. Make sure to tighten up everything that needs to be.

STEP 7

Connect the disposal to the flange, using a screwdriver. This step may require a second set of hands.

STEP 8

Connect the drain spout to the waste line, hook up the air gap hose, then plug the disposal in beneath the sink.
