How To Install A Bathroom Fan
Follow Milan's step-by-step instructions for installing a bathroom fan
A bathroom ventilation fan exhausts excess moisture out of the bathroom, keeping the space dry and fungus-free. Installing a bathroom fan may be easier than you think, and is definitely a DIY project you can handle.
NOTE: Bath fans can vary across manufacturers and models, so this is meant as a basic installation guide. Be sure to follow the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Tools/Materials
- Bath fan
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
- Wood screws
- Drywall screws
- Philips screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Wire caps
- Electrical tape
- Keyhole saw
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Since you’re working with electricity, cut the power to the room at the junction box.
Step 2
Remove the old bath fan and take off the grate. Depending on the old bathroom fan, you may need to head up into the attic to finish removal. Disconnect any ductwork from the old fan before removing the unit completely.
Step 3
Cut a hole for the bath fan.
Some newer bath fans come with a template, but if yours doesn’t include one, trace around the bath fan itself to ensure it will fit snug. Then, use a keyhole saw to cut the ceiling.
Step 4
Secure the new bath fan. Depending on the model you have, you may need to install the housing first, then secure it to the ceiling using drywall screws or standard screws if you’re drilling into a joist.
Step 5
Finish the ductwork and electrical.
Back up in the attic, seal up any loose ductwork with duct tape. Connect the wires - white to white, black to black, and green to green.
Attach wire caps.
Step 6
Install fan cover.
