As a contractor, there's a good chance you're getting more and more requests for modern shower panels that offer easy all-in-one control and a sleek, contemporary look. While these have been around for a while now, they've become common enough that you now see them in even modest home design and renovation projects.

Installing a single or multi-head shower system that takes advantage of one of these panels is a relatively easy task if you're familiar with this type of work. Keep reading to learn how to install a shower panel kit in any bathroom.

Pick Your Location

Use existing plumbing, if available, to install a shower panel.

Before you can install a shower panel kit you'll need to choose the proper location. In many cases, the location of your shower panel will be obvious since there will be existing hardware already in place. In the case of new construction though, you may need to start from scratch. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right location:

• Aim to center your shower panel on an interior shower wall. This will give the user the maximum amount of space within the shower box or shower area.

• Pay special attention to height. This is particularly important with spa shower systems and multi-head shower system designs. Consult with clients about placement whenever possible.

• Take note of where plumbing is already installed. You'll want to make use of existing plumbing when installing a shower panel if it's available.

Prepare Your Tools and Supplies

Installing a shower panel requires a few essentials, many of which are likely already in your everyday toolkit. Making sure you have everything handy will speed up the installation process. Here's what you'll need to get a shower panel properly installed in most cases:

• Electric drill. Make sure you have the appropriate bit for the wall or shower box material ready to go.

• Mounting hardware for the shower panel. This should come with the shower panel, but you may need additional fasteners for specialty surfaces like natural stone.

• Level. Use this often to ensure your shower panel is straight before and after you secure it to the wall.

• Adjustable wrench.

• Waterproof silicone sealant.

• Microfiber cleaning cloths.

Installing Your Shower Panel

You picked the perfect spot and you have your tools ready. Now it's time to get to work! Here's how you can install a shower panel quickly and efficiently:

Step 1:

Dry the work area thoroughly if you're installing a shower panel in a working shower. Cover the work area with a drop cloth for safety and to protect the flooring surface.

Step 2:

Hold the shower panel in place and make marks on the wall to indicate the installation position. Double-check that your marks are in the ideal place. You'll use these marks to drill holes for your mounting hardware.

Step 3:

Attach your mounting bracket to the wall. Ensure that you are using the correct hardware for the wall type. If the right hardware is not included with your shower panel kit, you may need to buy extra hardware.

Step 5:

Connect the hand shower hose to the outlet on the shower panel if applicable. Tighten the nuts on both sides to secure the connection.

Step 6:

Shower arm, hand with microfiber cloth and a wrench.

Connect the shower arm if one is included with your setup. Most shower panels have a shower arm that can be tightened in place simply using your hand. Finish tightening with an adjustable wrench and a microfiber cloth to protect the finish of the shower arm.

Step 7:

Back of shower panel, water hoses.

Connect the water tubes of the shower panel to the main water supply. Turn on the water to make sure that the water tubes are not leaking.

Step 8:

Shower panel, screws and a level tool.

Attach your shower panel to the wall using the mounting hardware. Use your level to make sure the panel is hung properly.

Step 9:

Hot and cold valve.

Check to make sure the hot and cold water supplies are working correctly. You need to do this now since you're about to secure the shower panel in place.

Step 10:

Shower panel, silicone gun tool, hand with microfiber cloth.

Use silicone sealant around the top and sides of the shower panel. Avoid sealing the bottom of the panel. This opening will allow water to escape the unit if it does get inside. Wipe away excess silicone sealant with a damp microfiber cloth.

Note that these instructions work for most shower panels, but you should always consult the manufacturer's guide before and during work.
