Build by Design: Fall 2019 Trends
Get pro design tips for using wood accents, matte black, brass, and more in your home this autumn and beyond
A new season means new trends! Whether you are planning a full-blown kitchen remodel or simply updating a current space, here are some hot new trends to consider.
Ditch the Hood
When thinking about the hood over your range, you have two choices: a custom, decorative statement hood, or a completely concealed unit. I usually opt for the latter, because the look is cleaner, softer, and more modern. This fall we will continue to see more kitchen designs incorporating hidden hoods. By eliminating the harsh, industrial feel of a bulky, stainless appliance hanging in your kitchen, you achieve a warmer, more cohesive look in the home. As designers we are all about aesthetic, and this look helps to elevate the beauty of the design.
Matte Black Everywhere
Everyone is going bold with black! From paint to windows, fixtures, hardware, and even appliances, matte black is definitely a trend on the rise. I am using it in almost every one of my projects right now. Black seems to complement almost anything and provides a warm, eye-catching contrast. Matte black is classic, yet makes a bold style statement!
Use of Wood
I love the shift from monochromatic painted cabinetry to a mix with warm woods. The biggest distinction here is that we are incorporating more wood, but not from head to toe. For the most eye-catching look, limit the wood to certain areas — such as the island or one wall of cabinetry. Two-toned (top versus bottom) is not the answer, but the mix is beautiful when executed right. Don’t rely on your cabinet guy to guide this process. To create this gorgeous look, you’ll need a seasoned pro (Interior Designer) to help you think outside the box and guide you in the right direction.
Brass
We have all been having fun with satin brass finishes for awhile now, but next up is polished and unlacquered brass. On trend? Yes. Traditional? Yes. Mixes well with others? Oh yeah. So while we are still going to see a lot of satin brass finishes, you will start to notice a popular shift towards these warm and elegant varieties. Brass is the perfect focal point or accent to bring into your kitchen or bathroom design.
Cabinet Details
We are loving the incoming trends in cabinetry! There are so many unique and eye-catching details that are being incorporated into custom cabinetry right now. Some of the favorites we’ve spotted are reeding and wide-set shiplap. These textures are a beautiful detail to both painted and stained cabinets. Also, while shaker cabinets are not leaving any time soon, you will start to notice some variation spicing things up. One in particular being a narrower face frame.
