Incorporating the Fall Color Palette into Your Home Decor

Pantone® is a standardized color matching system and a world-renowned authority on color. Each season, its consulting service, the Pantone® Color Institute, creates the Pantone® Fashion Color Trend Report; a color overview highlighting the top colors fashion designers will be featuring in their collections for the upcoming season. Color in fashion is a key indicator of the color stories we can expect to see showing up across all areas of design, including home decor. This season’s color forecast includes: Russet orange, crocus petal, valiant poppy, ultra violet (also the color of the year), ceylon yellow, martini olive, nebulas blue, limelight, quetzal green, and red pear.

Autumn decor often calls to mind shades of earth tones with brilliant bursts of orange, yellow, and red. Much of fall decor color is modeled after fall leaves, but it’s also the perfect time to begin incorporating jewel tones into your home decor. Think of clear, crisp, fall days and nights and consider adding deep hues of blue and violet. Imagine sitting next to a roaring fire and think of vibrant golds and brilliant reds. Because this decor can be added as early as September and linger as long as late November, it’s a good idea to think of these pieces as part of your home’s yearly decorative evolution.

Ways to Add Color

Many people decorate by placing a few knick knacks here and there, but with the fleeting colors of fall, why not take the opportunity to add vibrant hues to diverse places in your home to extend the season? There are so many ways to incorporate the fall color palette into your decor. Here are some ideas.

Throw Pillows and Blankets

Switch out your everyday accent pillows and throws for some in fall tones. This is a simple way to get ready for chilly fall nights spent cuddling on the couch. We love these comfy additions.

Accent Pieces

Add vases, bowls, and candle holders in autumnal hues. Smaller objects look best in groupings on tables. For example, they can work as centerpieces or end pieces on a mantel. Consider swapping out or adding wall art that incorporates fall themes or colors. Hang art that evokes feelings of autumn for you, whether that be a cityscape, an abstract, a still life, a landscape, or something more unique to your style. Accent furniture encompasses everything from trunks and large baskets to colorful chairs. But what’s really special about an accent piece is the personality it brings to a room. This is your chance to express your colorful side. While your sofa ultimately needs to be functional above all else, an accent piece can be strictly ornamental, it’s just a great bonus if it functions as additional seating or storage. For autumn, add a chair in an unexpected colored to the room. If you don’t have space for a chair, consider an ottoman, which can sometimes function as a coffee table as well. Lighting

For those quickly darkening autumn evenings, add a table lamp in a jewel color that will look great throughout winter or simply swap out a lamp shade for a surprising pop of color in a normally neutral space. Area Rugs and Throw Rugs

A large area rug can change the entire look of a room, so if your goal is to focus all of your decorative efforts on one space, a larger area rug is the way to go.
